Feeling busy and distracted Its not your fault

Feeling busy and distracted Its elend your faultFeeling busy and distracted Its leid your faultYouve got a new email from your boss, plus a dozen old ones that still require a response Your friend posted photos from her visit to a coffee plantation in Costa Rica Whats the stock market doing today? All illustrations by Jake Knapp from Make Time.Everyone is saying a bear market is coming, but you cant really predict those things Theres a new iPhone out, and you heard you can unlock it with your mind. You just got a notification The deputy secretary of some government agency is resigning You have time for a few minutes of Fortnite, dont you? Today you have a lot of meetings. What will you do about dinner? You should keep moving, be productive, and do the right thing. You read that the most successful people arent on facebook inc and have something called grit. That sounds good. You need grit.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreWe live in a distracting world, and its not getting any better. New information crashes toward us at every moment. Technology companies work tirelessly to create products that bring convenience and delight to our days. The incentive structure hasnt changed usage creates data, data sells ads, ubiquity creates demand, demand sells devices.Sure, Google hasDigital Wellbeingand Apple hasScreen Time, and both are good things. But the bottom line is that everyone involved- from the hardware makers to the OS designers to the app creators- benefit when we use ansicht technologies more, not less. Its natural to think we need more discipline, willpower, energy, stamina, focus, or grit to resist these distractions. More something, for sure. But for most people,I dont think willpower is the right approach. New psychology research is showing thatold ideas about willpower and self-control werent quite right. Just ask a gambling addict or a smoker. Its possible that we cant build willpower and we cant summon self-control, after all. Theyre myths. What often looks like strength of resolve is really the result of an environment or mindset that makes theright decisionstheeasy decisions. But if self-control is a function of circumstances, how can you change those circumstances? If willpower is a myth, how can you create an environment for good decisions that dont require willpower? It starts with defaults. If youre busy and distracted, its not yourfaultEvery day, dozens of defaults - from preinstalled apps to expectations of instant response, to smartphone notifications, to cultural agreements on whats considered normal - shape how we spend our time. Our willing acceptance of distracting apps and our culture of constant busyness show just how normal these things have become.Defaults seem inevitable after the fact, but they werent assembled according to a grand plan. Modern life is not a utopia designed by some genius - its just a collection of defaults that have stuck over the years. So if you constantly feel busy and distracted, its not your fault. But thereis something you can do about itYou can change the defaults of distraction and busyness by reconfiguring your technology.Lets get real If you want to reclaim control of your time, its your responsibility. No digital wellbeing feature or anti-technology manifesto is going to undo these defaults. And nobody cares more about your time than you do. Dont get me wrong Im glad that Google, Apple, and Facebook are designing tools to help us form healthier relationships with their products. Im happy that writers likeTristan HarrisandAdam Alterare pulling back the curtains on the tech industry and pushing these companies to do better. But you cant wait for tech companies to give you back your time. Its on you.Since youre reading this story, you probably feel like you should get better about distraction and focus. You probably recognize the sensation that rises after a mindless Instagram session or a where-did-the-day-go evening reflection. Maybe it feels like regret. Maybe it feels like fire. But if you feel it, harness that energy.Dont wait. Make the changes now.How to create barriers to distractionWhat Im about to suggest is simple but not easy. It requires a burst of effort, but once you reconfigure your devices and apps, you dont have to constantly resist the distractions. You wont feel that nagging pull to do a quick Twitter check, because you cant. You wont wonder whether you have any new emails, because you cant find out. The key is creating barriers to distraction. Here are three things you can try now- three tactics that take willpower and self-control out of the equation.1. Remove distracting apps (from yourphone)This is the simplest, most effective way to reclaim time and attention from your smartphone. In contrast to hacks like selectively disabling notifications, rearranging your home screen, customizing sounds and vibrations, or putting your p hone into Airplane or Do Not Disturb mode, removing apps gets to the core of the problem. It cuts off distraction where it starts. And it makes the hacks obsolete You wont have to worry about notifications or airplane mode or hiding your distracting appsif theyre not installed in the first place. If removing apps is so effective and so simple, why dont more people do it? Maybe we fear the anticipated pain of making hard choices, so we look for shortcuts that feel productive (like an elaborate form of procrastination). Maybe we worry about removing a certain app because we use it for work, or because well fall out of touch with friends, or because everyone else is using it. But we forget that defaults feel more permanent than they really are that the app store is still just one tap away and friction-free as ever and thatwe can still use Twitter and check email and read the news, but we can do it on our terms.Besides, Im not proposing monastic vows of tech abstinence- just an experiment with a distraction-free phone. After removing these apps, you might find that your feelings of FOMO are replaced with new feelings of calm and control over your time. You might realize that seeing your friends photos on Facebook is not the same as keeping in touch with them. And you might discover that beinglessresponsive actually makes you amorevaluable colleague, because you can spend more time on the work that matters to your team.2. Log out and change passwords (on your computer)Removing Infinity Pool apps from your smartphone is a big step toward reclaiming your time and attention. But you might find that the empty address bar of your computers web browser is just as hard to resist. Its right there every time you wake your computer a magical portal to the infinite possibilities of the Internet.WhoaHow can we make time for what matters when the alternative is infinite entertainment and education? Once again, the key is creating barriers to distraction but on the computer, its no t quite as easy as deleting a few apps.Heres what works for meFirst, I changed my passwords for Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn (my top distractions on the computer).I chose new passwords that were random and impossible to remember. For example, m6a$78Hg. (Dont get excited thats not really one of my passwords.)I put those passwords in a password manager app. I like1Password, but there are others.I logged out of each and every Infinity Pool website.I removed all bookmarks and shortcuts to these sites from my browser. These simple tweaks create speed bumps on the road to mindlessly checking one of these Infinity Pools. Lets say I semi-unconsciously decide to check Twitter. (This happens multiple times a day ) Because I no longer have a link in my bookmark bar, I have to type in twitter.com. But when I hit return and the login screen appears instead of the feed, Im reminded to pause and consider what Im doing Am I checking Twitter on purpose, or by default? Do I have something to do- li ke see if anyone posted a question aboutmy book- or am I just looking for a break? The answers to these questions are not always clear, and I dont always make the right decisions. (Right being the decisions I know I want myself to make. Im not talking about some universal judgment of whats right and wrong here. When Im finished using one of these sites, I log out again, resetting the barriers to distraction. Ill admit That final log-out does require a small amount of ongoing discipline. But this habit is easier to maintain than most, because I can harness the feelings of guilt and annoyance that typically accompany the end of a session with one of these apps. It goes something like thisHmm, do I really want to look at Twitter? Yeah, okay, theres something I need to do. (30 minutes later.) Ugh, I spent half an hour on Twitter I gotta do something else. I should log out so this doesnt happen again. ClickThe friction introduced by having to stop, consider, grab the password, copy, paste, and sign in does me good. It forces me to make a decision about how Im spending my time, instead of mindlessly reacting to defaults.3. Get proactive with yourtimeThis defensive perspective- creating barriers and habits to defeat distraction- is essential for reclaiming time and attention, but an emphasis on defense can feel like drudgery. Its like eating healthfully or saving money both are necessary but can feel like chores (or worse, like deprivation) unless balanced by an awareness ofwhy were adopting those behaviors.Similarly, when it comes to how we spend our time, we need more than defense - we need to think proactively about what were making timefor. The best way Ive found to maintain a proactive mindset is with the daily practice of choosing a Highlight.Try asking yourself the questionWhen I look back on my day, what do I want the highlight to be?Maybe its an accomplishment at work. Maybe its a project youve been meaning to do at home. Or maybe its an activity that brings y ou joy - a long walk, a board game, or cooking a meal from scratch.Thinking about what youre making time for can create the motivation to set new habits into motion. And when your habits fall apart and things dont go as planned, the daily presence of your Highlight becomes a beacon, reminding you of the decisions you made and the plans you set - and giving you a boost to get back on track.A daily Highlight can also be the saving grace of an otherwise blah day. When youve chosen a Highlight, and planned your day to make time for it, you can mark a win even if the rest of the day kind of sucks.Thats one of the reasons I love to work on my Highlight first thing in the morning When I make time for something important right after waking up, the rest of the day is gravy. A traffic jam, a delayed train, a meeting that runs late, an outdoor workout thats rained out - these things are a drag, for sure, butwhen Ive already made time for my Highlight, I can grab a slice of satisfaction from even the most unsatisfactory of days. The power of a Highlight to rescue a day is critical to the attitude of self-forgiveness that I talked about at the beginning of this story. See, youll never be perfectly free of distraction. Your days will never be perfectly planned. And while its not your fault that you live in a world of endless busyness and distraction, youcando something about it. Youcanadjust the defaults of this world.Youcancreate an environment that supports and enables the kinds of decisions you want to make about your time.If youre intentional about your decisions, yet forgiving when things dont go according to plan, you can change your life. You have to start sometime. Navy Fraternization Policies

Navy Fraternization PoliciesNavy Fraternization PoliciesThe Navys policies on fraternization are contained in OPNAV Instruction 5370.2B, Navy Fraternization Policy. The Fraternization Policy Personal relationships between officer and enlisted members that are unduly familiar and that do not respect differences in rank and grade are prohibitedand violate long-standing custom and tradition of the naval tafelgeschirr. Similar relationships that are unduly familiar between officers or between enlisted members of different rank or grade may also be prejudicial to good order and discipline or of a nature to bring discredit on the naval service and are prohibited. Commands are expected to take administrative and disciplinary action as necessary to correct such inappropriate behavior. The policies listed here are lawful general orders. Violation of these policies subject the involved members to disciplinary action under the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ). Fraternization is the t erm traditionally used to identify personal relationships that contravene the customary bounds of acceptable senior-subordinate relationships. Although it has most commonly been applied to officer-enlisted relationships, fraternization also includes improper relationships and social interaction between officer members as well as between enlisted members. Background of the Policy Navy has historically relied upon custom and tradition to define the bounds of acceptable personal relationships among its members. Proper social interaction among officer and enlisted members has always been encouraged as it enhances unit morale and esprit de corps. At the same time, unduly familiar personal relationships between officers and enlisted members have traditionally been contrary to naval custom because they undermine the respect for authority, which is essential to Navys ability to accomplish its military mission. Over 200 years of seagoing experience have demonstrated that seniors must mai ntain thoroughly professional relationships with juniors at all times. Misuse of Grade or fleck This custom recognizes the need to prevent theuse of a senior grade or position in such a way that it results in (or gives the appearance of) favoritism, preferential treatment, personal gain, or involves actions that otherwise may reasonably be expected to undermine good order, discipline, authority, or high unit morale. Juniors to Recognize and Respect In like manner, custom requires that junior personnel recognize and respect the authority inherent in a seniors grade, rank, or position. This recognition of authority is evidenced by observance and enforcement of the military courtesies and customs that have traditionally defined proper senior-subordinate relationships. Fraternization is Gender-Neutral Historically, and as used here, fraternization is a gender-neutral concept. Its focus is the detriment to good order and discipline resulting from the erosion of respect for au thority inherent in an unduly familiar senior-subordinate relationship, not the sex of the members involved. In this sense, fraternization is a uniquely military concept, although abuse of a seniors position for personal gain and actual or perceived preferential treatments are leadership and management problems that also arise in civilian organizations. In the context of military life, the potential erosion of respect for the authority and leadership position of a senior in grade or rank can have an enormously negative effect on good order and discipline and seriously undermine a units effectiveness. Therefore, the prohibition of fraternization serves a valid, mission-essential purpose. Prohibited Relationships Personal relationships between officer and enlisted members that are unduly familiar and that do not respect differences in grade or rank are prohibited. Such relationships are prejudicial to good order and discipline and violate long-standing traditions of the Naval serv ice. Personal relationships between chief petty officers (E-7 to E-9) and junior personnel (E-l to E-6), who are assigned to the same command, that are unduly familiar and that do not respect differences in grade or rank are prohibited. Likewise, personal relationships that are unduly familiar between staff/instructor and student personnel within Navy training commands, and between recruiters and recruits/applicants that do not respect differences in grade, rank, or the staff/student relationship are prohibited. Such relationships are prejudicial to good order and disciplineand violate long-standing traditions of the Naval service. When prejudicial to good order or of a nature to bring discredit on the Naval service, personal relationships between officer members or between enlisted members that are unduly familiar and that do not respect differences in grade or rank are prohibited. Prejudice to good order and discipline or discredit to the Naval service may result from, but are no t limited to, circumstances which Call into question a seniors objectivityResult in actual or apparent preferential treatmentUndermine the authority of a seniorCompromise the chain of command A Punishable Offense Fraternization, as defined above, is prohibited and punishable as an offense under the UCMJ. It is impossible to set forth every act that may be prejudicial to good order and discipline or that is service discrediting because the surrounding circumstances often determine whether the conduct in question is inappropriate. Proper social interaction and appropriate personal relationships are an important part of unit morale and esprit de corps. Officer and enlisted participation on command sports teams and other command-sponsored events intended to build unit morale and camaraderie are healthy and clearly appropriate. Defining Unduly Familiar Relationships Dating, shared living accommodations, intimate or sexual relations, commercial solicitations, private geschftlicher umgang partnerships, gambling and borrowing money between officers and enlisted members, regardless of Service, are unduly familiar and are prohibited. Likewise, such conduct between officer members and between enlisted members of different rank or grade would be unduly familiar and constitute fraternization if the conduct is prejudicial to good order and discipline or is Service discrediting. Junior and Senior Grade or Rank Prejudice to good order and discipline and discredit to the Naval service may occur when the degree of familiarity between a senior and a junior in grade or rank is such that the seniors objectivity is called into question. This loss of objectivity by the senior may result in actual or apparent preferential treatment of the junior, and use of the seniors position for the private gain of either the senior or junior member. The actual or apparent loss of objectivity by a senior may result in the perception the senior is no longer capable or willing to exercise fai rness and make judgments on the basis of merit. Fraternization Outside the Direct Chain of Command Unduly familiar relationships may exist with individuals outside ones direct chain of command. By long-standing custom and tradition, chief petty officers (E-7 to E-9) are separate and distinct leaders within their assigned command.Chief petty officersprovide leadership not just within their direct chain of command, but for the entire unit. The prohibitions listed in this policy are based on this unique leadership responsibility. While the existence of a direct senior-subordinate supervisory relationship is not a prerequisite for a relationship between juniors and seniors to constitute fraternization, the fact that individuals are in the same chain of command increases the likelihood that an unduly familiar relationship between senior and junior officers, or between senior and junior enlisted members will result in prejudice to good order and discipline or discredit to the naval servic e. Marriage and Fraternization Conduct, which constitutes fraternization, is not excused or mitigated by a subsequent marriage between the offending parties. Service members who are married or otherwise related (father/son, etc.) to other service members, must maintain the requisite respect and decorum attending the official relationship while either is on duty or in uniform in public. Compatible withsea/shore rotation policyand the needs of the service, service members married to each other will not be assigned to the same chain of command. Responsibility of Senior Grade Members Seniors throughout the chain of command will Be especially attentive to their personal associations such that their actions and the actions of their subordinates are supportive of the military chain of command and good order and discipline. Since circumstances are important in determining whether personal relationships constitute fraternization, seniors must provide guidance on appropriate relations hips that build unit cohesion and morale.Ensure that all members of the command are aware of the policies set forth here.Address the offending conduct by taking appropriate action, to include counseling, issuing letters of instruction, comments on fitness reports or performance evaluations, reassignment, and/or, if necessary, by taking appropriate disciplinary steps. The responsibility for preventing inappropriate relationships must rest primarily on the senior. While the senior party is expected to control and preclude the development of inappropriate relationships, this policy is applicable to both members and both are accountable for their own conduct.

The study also took photos of each spouse during their laboratory session, which provided information on the intimates physical attractiveness. Those tests revealed that maximizing men who had attractive wives were more satisfied at the start of their marriage compared to those who had unattractive partners. This theory was echoed for women married to a high-status husband, who was found to be more satisfied over time compared to women who married lesser. The study also found that both male and femalesatisficer(people who are less specific about decisions) were satisfied despite their partners traits. How to make the salary expectations question work for you

How to make the salary expectations question work for you How to make the salary expectations question work for you During the job interview process, you should have three ideas about compensation clear in your mind before you get the salary expectations question: what’s realistically at the upper end of your range, an amount that you’d accept, and a pay level that you’d decline. You should write these down for your own reference early in the process before the heat of salary negotiations begins to warp your expectations in ways you might not expect. It is becoming increasingly illegal in the United States for employers to ask for current salary in a job interview, which creates an interesting dynamic that is to your advantage. Ideally, you’d like your future employer to reveal their number first. If it’s your high-end number, you could take the offer right away. If it’s below your low-end, you can reject out of hand. And if it’s around your attractive number you may very well consider moving or staying as the situation suits you.Ladders is now on SmartNews!Download the SmartNews app and add the Ladders channel to read the latest career news and advice wherever you go.Using the salary expectations question to turn the tables“What are your salary expectations?” is a terrific chance for you to turn the tables. You don’t need to answer the question and shouldn’t. Instead, you should get a range from the recruiter or HR person before going in (“in the interest of saving everyone’s time, I would need to know what range this position is budgeted for, before considering”) and side-step the grilling about your current compensation (“my understanding is that we’re talking about a future position at your company and what my skills and talents would be worth in that regard, not what I’ve been paid in the past for a different role, with different responsibilities, at a different company - am I correct in assuming that or am I off-base?”)Don’t bring it up in interviews until after they know how excited they are about working with you, because that’ s when they’re most likely to get excited about paying you more. How recruiters get you to crack on the compensation questionBe warned that experienced recruiters can usually get you to crack. Using pregnant pauses and social engineering or peer pressure, they often ask something like “having carefully considered your career and future, what are your salary expectations and why?”Without willpower, and practice at negotiating in high stakes situations, most candidates give up the requested information here. Try not to, even if they guilt you for it.You might use evasive techniques such as asking “Oh, I know that question, asking what my current salary is, was being phased out for a reason,” or “are you sure we’re allowed to talk about that?,” or “oh, I’m paid fine, but I’m open to jobs that pay more, what’s this one pay?,” or “I’m canvassing the market to see what rates are.”What to do with the salary numberWhen you get the number from them, hold it tig ht. You can decide later what you want to do with it. If you don’t tell them what your current number is, it can only go up. Sometimes by a lot. But the key is to not share any of your confidential information prematurely (or ever, to be honest). You can always come back with your counter-offer later. When it comes to compensation negotiations, try to get everything on the table at once - benefits, perks, pay, retirement, vacation, meals, car, etc. Let them know that you very methodically want to compare job duties and perks between all outstanding offers.Throughout the process, when asked, it’s best to indicate you are considering other roles, most or all of which are similar to the present one in most respects, and leave it at that. If some of them are very far afield, in wildly different industries or cities, do not share that with your interviewers, as these data points can confuse. Why, they might ask, are you interviewing for this job? Is it for fun, out of curiosity, or b ecause you’re actually interested in filling my role, right now? It’s sufficient to indicate that there are alternatives and demur on the specificity. This is when to signal interest in the jobIt’s also best for you to communicate that you want the job, should the pay, conditions, and work be right for you. That leaves a ton of wiggle room, but also keeps the company interested. Displaying ambivalence about the role, or uncertainty about your interest, is never the best way to negotiate the most attractive offer. Ideally, you’re able to convey a blazing enthusiasm for all things about your prospective employer and the only remaining issue is the tiny matter of pay. If they can get that detail out of the way, you are ready to jump in and get going right now. When it’s no longer true that you’re interested in the job, it’s best to be explicit and let the company know. The road is long and professional courtesy does pay off. This article is adapted from  Ladders 2018 Intervi ews Guide: 74 Questions That Will Land You the Job (Ladders 2018 Guide). How to Weigh Job Satisfaction Against Salary

How to Weigh Job Satisfaction Against Salary How to Weigh Job Satisfaction Against Salary It’s an age-old career question that many have asked before and many more will ask in the future: which is more important? Job satisfaction or salary? While answer to this question is highly individual, statistics show that once a salary eclipses $75,000, money does nothing to influence happiness, enjoyment or sadness. This could mean that at least once certain needs are met job satisfaction will more directly affect happiness, enjoyment and sadness, because money won’t. Recently we polled our Twitter followers to get another perspective about the balance between job satisfaction and salary, and the results confirmed the general opinion: being satisfied on the job is more important than the salary that comes with it. Whats more important to you? #Career - Simply Hired (@SimplyHired) February 9, 2016 In this informal poll 73 percent of the 71 voters indicated that job satisfaction was more important than salary in their career. On the other side of the equation, 27 percent of the voters indicated that salary was more important than job satisfaction. Finding a higher paying job or a more satisfying job are both legitimate career goals. It’s important to understand your own priorities during your job search, however, so that you can target your search for the best position for you. Find A Higher-Paying Job There are two traditional ways to make more money on the job: get a raise  or find a new job that pays more. A lot of getting a raise in your current job will come down to your skills, your performance and the timing within your company and industry. The best thing you can do is to bring more skills to the table  and take on new responsibilities as you grow in your position.   As for getting a new job that pays more, you’ll want to work on your skills for that as well. But you’ll also want to zero in on industries and companies that are known for paying well  and refine your interview performance so that you can negotiate like a pro. Find a More Satisfying Job Finding your work bliss  is no simple thing. The process starts with understanding which workplace qualities energize and satisfy you and which drain and demoralize you. You’ll want to consider a job’s responsibilities and the workplace culture  from the perspective of your personality, your skills and your preferences so that you can find one that has the highest likelihood of making you happy. What about you? Would you take a position with less satisfying responsibilities and requirements for a higher salary? Or would you prefer a lower salary with a high level of job satisfaction?

5 Ways to Explain Away Common Resume Gaps

5 Ways to Explain Away Common Resume Gaps 5 Ways to Explain Away Common Resume Gaps Regardless of the reasoning, the majority of people have to take time off work at some point in their career. Getting back in the job market afterward can be tough especially if you are concerned about a resume gap in employment. However, knowing how to explain your resume gap can turn a difficult interview question into an opportunity for personal branding. Read these 5 ways you can explain away your resume gap in a way that shows positive growth. These tips and examples help you prepare a well-rounded response to any resume gap questions you may come across during your job search. 1. How to explain you were laid off Being laid off is more common than you think. An interviewer is more likely to show sympathy because you being laid off is usually out of your control. Avoid negative comments about your previous company or boss. Focus on the positive accomplishments and the experience you gained while you worked for the company. Bad Example: “My old boss really didn’t like me anyway. He always had it in for me. I am sure he jumped at the opportunity to cut me in the layoffs.” Good Example: “The company had to implement major budget cuts. Unfortunately, my position was one of the many that were cut in the process. I am proud of the achievements I made during my time at the company. This can be reinforced by my manager, whom I listed as a reference on my application.” 2. How to explain you took time off to travel Avoid focusing on the fun and excitement of traveling. Focus on how traveling contributed to your personal career growth and development. Mention any paid or volunteer work that you had taken during this time and the additional personal and professional skills that you gained. Bad Example: “If I could travel for the rest of my life, I would. I went deep sea diving in the Galapagos, mountain climbing in the Himalayas and went to countless parties in Thailand. It was the most fun I have had in my life! I hope to do that again when I have the money.” Good Example: “I worked from the time I was 16 and was very successful in my career. Yet, I was only working for the money. My travel experience gave me the opportunity to grow personally. I learned what my personal motivations are and how to be more globally minded. I learned a new language in the process. Now, I am ready to jump back into my career with newfound energy, focus, motivation and a purpose.” 3. How to explain you went back to school This is probably the easiest to explain. If the education you pursued is relevant to your chosen career path, you have your answer. Almost all mid to senior level jobs require a certain level of intelligence and educational background for career growth. Explain why going back to school has helped you get closer to your career goals. Bad Example: “I still haven’t figured out what I want to do in my career. I decided to take a business course on a new subject. Going to school seems easier than trying to figure out what I want. I am still not sure if this is the path I want to take.” Good Example: “When I got my bachelors degree, I thought I was done with college. I started my career, and everything was going great but it suddenly came to a standstill, and higher positions required that I go back to school in order to achieve my goals. So, I decided to take some time to expand my education to broaden my career options. I’m looking forward to using my experience, newfound skills, and education to benefit the company I work for. ” 4. How to explain you had to care for family Caring for family, whether it’s your children, an elderly parent or sick relative, is a tough job that requires a number of skills, which you now have. This includes time management, hard work ethic, managing people, and organizing schedules. These are only a couple of the many skills you gain while caring for a family member full-time. In addition to the hard skillsyou already have, caring for sick family requires soft skills, something that has been growing in importance to companies these days. Bad Example: “I am the closest living relative to my mother, so I got stuck with having to care for her. I tried to hold down a job and care for her at the same time, but it was just too much for me.” Good Example: “After a lot of consideration, I decided that I needed to prioritize family. During that time, I made sure to keep my professional skills up to date by taking business courses. Now, I am in a position where I can refocus my attention on my career, and I look forward to applying my previous experience and skills, as well as the additional soft skills I have learned, to my new role.” 5. How to explain you had to take time off for your health Preparation is key here. Telling a detailed story of the health issue that caused you to leave work is only going to cause the interviewer to pity you. Pity does not help your chances of landing the job. Prepare a brief and straightforward explanation that you are comfortable with. Explain that you were able to overcome this and quickly move the conversation to present day and the relevant skills you bring to the table. Bad Example: “I fell and hurt my back. I had to go through undergo three separatesurgeries, and I almost died twice in that time. It was pretty bad there for awhile.” Good Example: “I hit a rough patch physically and took some time off to focus on my recovery so that I could go back to work as quickly and efficiently as possible. Overcoming this challenge has made me stronger. I am ready to dive back in and focus on the next stage of my career.”

Jobs and Social Media--From the Other Side of the Desk

Jobs and Social Media--From the Other Side of the Desk Jobs and Social MediaFrom the Other Side of the Desk When you’re searching for a job, it’s easy to develop tunnel vision. In the flurry of jobseekers’ Twitter accounts, RSS feeds, and email alerts, it can be useful to take a step back and remember that on the other side of all your efforts are people puzzling over how to reach the best possible recruits. Sometimes, their recruitment strategies aren’t so different from the ones you’re using to find a great position. Looking at the search from the other side of the desk (or the screen) may help you get a better feel for the companies you’re hoping to join- including their strengths, cultures, and challenges. And understanding the mindset of employers can help you communicate your value as a potential employee and problem-solver. Social Media Recruiting: Brave New World In a recent study we conducted of 500 professional service firms, we found that 55% of companies use the Internet to recruit new employees. Social media recruiting is an easy, inexpensive, and increasingly common way for companies and job seekers to connect- and it’s becoming more and more effective. In fact, according to a Jobvite 2012 survey, 1 in 6 job seekers say they found their current job through social media. Maintaining a professional social media presence shows employers that you understand contemporary communication channels, and puts you in a space where more and more companies are turning for recruits. But what about those companies that don’t use the Internet to recruit- or at least not yet? Well, our study found that 66% of firms plan to increase their online marketing budgets this year. Those budgets include recruitment; companies recognize that the future is online, and they’re moving toward it. Job seekers do well to stay ahead of the curve. And here’s the beauty of professional networking with social media: these days, you can send a signal that reaches beyond the digital domain. By using platforms like LinkedIn to extend your professional network, you can communicate your expertise (and availability) to a wide range of professional contacts. Even if a contact’s company isn’t hiring, they may know someone â€" a former colleague, say â€" who is. That contact of a contact might not have been actively recruiting online, but that doesn’t mean you can’t reach them with online tools. Company Content: A Glimpse Inside These days, many savvy companies regularly produce content that educates their audience and helps both buyers and potential recruits understand the company- who they are, what they know, and what they do. Think company blogs, videos, and ebooks - often filled with valuable industry-related educational content. This is called “content marketing,” and companies’ social media recruiting frequently coincide with their content marketing efforts. As a jobseeker, you want to understand potential employers as well as you can. So make use of their content. What exactly does Company A do? What sort of clients do they serve? Firms’ websites and social media feeds may provide valuable insight. Social media can offer subtle glimpses into the working culture of a firm. If you see occasional photos from corporate events and parties, these might tell you something about day to day life at the company. News bulletins- awards won by the company, major contracts landed, the development of an exciting new product- may help you understand the company’s focus and direction. Thinking Like a Marketer Companies are using content marketing to communicate a lot of things, including their unique identity and their place in their particular industry. But one of the most important things they’re trying to do is demonstrate their expertise. Keep these goals in mind as you’re marketing yourself. How can you demonstrate your unique expertise and show how it aligns with a company’s needs? Social media is a fantastic opportunity to engage in industry conversations. Platforms like Twitter and LinkedIn Groups give you the opportunity to communicate directly with professionals in your field. If you take the time to ask thoughtful questions and offer informed opinions to your social media channels on a regular basis, you will start to appear on the radar for your industry. Then, when you do post a job advertisement, you will already have made a professional connection- and this could be the basis for an ongoing relationship. Lee W. Love a little change in work and life. It adds up! Love a little change in work and life. It adds up! Self-Assessment Quiz â€" True or False: I am brave. I seek out new opportunities in my job and within my career. I boldly walk through open doors, even if I stumble upon them accidentally. I am open to relocating for my job. Well, grasshopper, we’ve reached the end of February. We’re a little less than 60 days into a new year. How’re you doing? I’m hoping you’ve purchased my  2018 Is a Great Year for Eating  Pink Elephants  Vision Board Planner  and have been checking small bites off your list of things to do toward accomplishing your goals every day. If not, it’s never too late to start! Fill me in with comments below on your progress! This year (for real, for real!) is about change. Whew! I’ve made some major changes. Like getting this website up and running. Making sure you’ve got content that will help move you to your next level of best, in not one but- count them- SIX areas of your life. Providing workshops for those of you who need more. And it has not been easy. Lawrdy! But then change rarely is. But it is CRUCIAL to growth. Some of y’all (like those of you who may not have answered TRUE to the majority of questions on the quiz above) are afraid to make changes, especially at work .  You take the same route to the office, sit in the same chair, use the same coffee mug, and have lunch at the same eatery … each and every day. C’mon now! Switch it UP! There is nothing wrong with having a schedule, being consistent, or enjoying stability. What I’m saying is, you need to stir the waters a bit in order to grow at work. You cannot be a change-hater!This Friday before you power down your computer, why not make a few simple changes in your work space? Reposition the Gumby and Pokey tchotchkes on your desk. Swap the photos of the ones you love with some you took over the holidays. Move some of those Post-it notes. Better yet, purge things you don’t need, and finish some to-do lists so that you can  throw out  those Post-its. Here’s another one. Look at your desk as though today were your last day. What things would you quickly and easily chuck? Are you evah going to wear any of those shoes under your desk? If not, scoop them up and take them to the Goodwill. What about all those books collecting dust? Can they be donated to a local nonprofit organization or a hospital?Keep going. Change your coffee mug! Opt for one that makes you smile even when there isn’t coffee in it. Reposition your computer. Change the lighting in your space. On Monday, take a different route, bus, or train to work. Make eye contact with and  smile  at people you meet en route. Heaven forbid, strike up a conversation with a stranger.Bring in a plant to help bring oxygen into your space, and make it a goal to keep it alive. Do  something  that will help refresh your mindset for the next sixty days. What’s the point? Just getting you into the practice of making changes. Once you start making small changes, it gets easier to make bigger ones. Sometimes change is thrust upon you, and other times you have the option of easing into it. If you are easing into making career changes this year by embracing the littlest of changes, when you do get that new job or promotio n, your brain will already be in acceptance/ transition mode. In fact, once you’ve programmed it to look for changes, it’ll be more prone to seek out that job or promotion on autopilot. How cool is that?Be sure to include clues on your vision board about the change you’re working toward. If you want a corner office by next year, include a picture of the chair you want in your office. Or, heck, go all out and get a special “Corner Office Calendar” that you use to mark off the days, each cross-out getting you closer to the deadline date you identified back in January when you set your  SMART goals. And while you’re at it, walk around your office floor with an attitude of change. Chat with people you normally ignore. You never know, they might know of someone who’s leaving the role you have your eye on. Coincidence? Perhaps. But strange things happen when you embrace change. You start to notice it everywhere!Cheryl Grace is the sassy aunt, best friend, and mentor you’ve always needed in your life.
